Fintiri defeats Aisha Binani with 430,821 votes to win Adamawa governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared incumbent governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri the winner of the Adamawa governorship election.

INEC declared Fintiri on Tuesday following its resumption of the collation of results from Saturday’s supplementary poll.

According to results announced by INEC, Fintiri polled 430,821 votes to defeat Aisha Binani, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 396,788.

The Adamawa governorship election was marred with infractions after the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, declared Binani the winner of the poll under when collation was still in process.

INEC swiftly described the announcement by Hudu as lacking merit and a usurpation of the powers of the Returning Officer.

The Adamawa REC was subsequently suspended and recommended for prosecution prior to the resumption of the collation of results on Tuesday.

With the declaration, Fintiri will now serve a second term as the governor of Adamawa state.
