How I learned humanity from a beggar – Lagos lady

A lady believed to be in her middle age has narrated how a conversation with a little girl who was begging thought her the true meaning and essence of humanity.

The conversation obtained by our reporter from an online source detailed how the lady and the little beggar met.

According to the conversation, the lady was waiting for a friend outside the popular Ikeja Mall in Lagos, the friend was inside the mall to get some groceries and while the lady was waiting for her outside there approached the beggar demanding for some money to buy something to eat but the lady replied she had not eaten as well since the breaking of the dawn.

“Aunty, make you give me money make I buy food chop,” the little girl asked.

The young lady smiled back and replied, “I have not also eaten since morning”.

The girl asked her if she meant it, and the lady said yes.

Then the girl handed the lady all the naira notes she had in her hand to buy some food.

The young lady was surprised, so she asked the girl if she could use her money and she said yes. When the lady counted the money, it was N100.

The lady then told her it won’t be enough to buy food and the small girl asked her to wait. She rushed to a corner where she keeps all her money and brought N200.

The girl handed her the money and told her N300 should be enough to buy rice.

The lady told her that she would still need water and the girl asked her to wait so she begs people for money for her.

Not too long, after about 15 minutes later, the girl came back with N10 and gave it to the young lady. She also told her that she can give her directions to a canteen where food is affordable.

The young lady followed her. During the conversation at the canteen, they caught the attention of people at the canteen and some suggested to the young lady not to take the girl serious, because she was just a beggar but the lady ignored.

While they waited, the lady asked the girl her name and she said Leila and that she 10 years old.

Then the young lady asked why she gave her all her money, the girl replied, “You are hungry Aunty. I am a beggar and I can beg for money when I am hungry, but you cannot”.

At this point, the young lady had tears in her eyes and passers-by were wondering what could have led to the tears in her eyes.

The lady gave the beggar her money back, but the girl was disappointed and asked why.

The young lady told her that she was only waiting for a friend who was inside the Mall.

She ordered enough food for the girl and some drinks. She took the girl to her car and took pictures with her.

Humanity is behaving humanely. This little girl is more human than many of us that are educated. In all you do, let the love of humanity, surpass all.
