Super Eagles downgraded after defeat to Guinea-Bissau
Nigeria’s senior football team, the Super Eagles, have been downgraded in the latest FIFA ranking after suffering a shocking 0-1 defeat to low-rated Guinea-Bissau in the last 2023 AFCON Qualifiers.

The Super Eagles fell from 35th position to 40 following their defeat to the African wild dogs of Guinea-Bissau.
Although, analysts say the recent downgrade might not be connected to the team’s defeat to the West African country but due to the weight of opposition and the status of matches add values to the ranking of the respective teams.
Not only had the Eagles fallen from 35 to 40 globally, they have also lost the top five spot in the continent to sixth.
In previous rankings, Nigeria have been witnessing a steady decline. The West African football power house dropped from 32 in last year’s ranking to 35 in October and now 40.
The saving grace for the Eagles in the return leg with Guinea-Bissau was the only goal via a penalty courtesy Moses Simon.
Elsewhere, Morocco have seen the country rising steadily.
A good run at the World Cup in Qatar and excellent results in high profile friendly matches with Brazil and Peru have seen the Atlas Lions becoming Africa’s number one, pushing Senegal down to the second position.
In third position is Tunisia while Algeria and Egypt complete the top five in Africa.
