EFCC arraigns fake engineer for alleged £120,150 fraud scheme
On Thursday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Wilson Daphey, also known as Jefrey Guiseppe, before Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Daphey faced nine charges, including obtaining money under false pretenses and money laundering.
According to the allegations, Daphey, along with Evans Nnamdi Aguh, Christopher Chinedu Ajufo, Ifeanyi Enuma, and Ojinanaka Kingsley Chukwuma, who are currently at large, manipulated and obtained £120,150 from Ms. Petra Goschenhofer.
Count two of the charge stated: “Between November 2018 and December 2019, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, you, Wilson Daphey (aka Jefrey Guiseppe), with intent to defraud over the internet, presented yourself to Ms. Petra Goschenhofer, whom you met on Instagram, as an American civil engineer residing in Rome but temporarily in Dubai for a construction project. In that assumed character, you obtained a total sum of £69,880, thereby committing an offense contrary to section 22 (2) (b) (ii) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015.”
The defendant pleaded ‘not guilty’ to all charges.
In response, the prosecution counsel, Deborah Ademu-Eteh, requested a trial date and the remand of the defendant.
The defense counsel, E.O Clement, moved a bail application for the defendant.
Justice Olajuwon adjourned the matter until May 17 for ruling on the bail application while the defendant remains in EFCC custody.
