FCT Gears Up For Presidential Handover: Special forces, snipers stand ready

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) deployed special forces, snipers, and various security agencies to ensure a smooth presidential handover ceremony at the Eagle Square.

Snipers were strategically positioned at the Secretariat buildings and along the Aso Drive axis.

Increased numbers of uniformed personnel were also observed throughout the city centre and other locations.

Security sources confirmed that additional troops were on high alert to respond to any potential threats.

During a regimental dinner, General Lucky Irabor, the Chief of Defence Staff, reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to upholding democracy.

He expressed confidence in the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies, emphasizing their contribution to ongoing counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations.

General Irabor pledged to protect Nigeria’s wealth as part of their dedication to national development.

He concluded by reaffirming loyalty to the president and the Nigerian constitution as the current administration neared its end.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Haruna Garba, announced the deployment of significant human and material resources across the FCT to ensure a safe and peaceful inauguration.

This deployment involved intelligence gathering, tactical assets, and collaboration among various agencies to safeguard the nation’s democratic process and preempt potential threats.

The strategic operational deployment included visible policing across the territory, stop and search operations, intelligence-led raids in high-risk areas, surveillance activities, and vehicular and foot patrols.

Additionally, strategic diversions were planned to optimize security arrangements.

CP Garba also informed the public about a scheduled fireworks display on the eve of the inauguration, at midnight on May 28, 2023, to celebrate the advent of the new administration. The fireworks were planned to take place at the City Gate and the Millennium Tower.

During a briefing with senior officers from all units and formations of the command, CP Garba emphasized the importance of attention to detail, adherence to global best practices, and respect for fundamental human rights while discharging their duties.
