Blind teacher overcomes challenges, marries love of his life in Kano

Dahuru Idris Abdulhamid, a well-known blind teacher from Kano State, recently tied the knot with his beloved, Maimunatu Sa’idu, in Zakirai town, Gezawa LGA.
The wedding ceremony, which followed the payment of a N50,000 dowry, took place on Sunday at the bride’s residence and was attended by a large gathering of well-wishers, relatives, and visually impaired individuals.
Abdulhamid, a holder of a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), gained popularity in 2021 after an interview with Daily Trust shed light on his educational struggles while serving as a volunteer teacher in a public school.
As news of his story spread through various media platforms, an anonymous philanthropist generously purchased a brand-new house valued at N2.7m for Abdulhamid.
Subsequently, the Kano State Government offered him a teaching position at Grade Level 07.
Now, two years later, Abdulhamid has fulfilled his dream of becoming a husband.
In a press statement following the wedding, Abdulhamid expressed his gratitude for the life-changing impact of the Daily Trust report, which motivated him to embrace marriage.
He revealed that he met his life partner through her elder brother, who happened to be his friend. Abdulhamid remarked, “From that moment, I realized that I had found a wife who accepted me wholeheartedly despite my blindness.”
When asked about his plans to care for his wife, Abdulhamid stated, “Marriage involves the exchange of ideas, needs, and responsibilities. Both of us have our own roles to fulfil. I will do my utmost to meet her needs, and I pray that Almighty Allah guides me on the right path.”
The bride, sharing her sentiments, conveyed her unwavering commitment and readiness to fulfil her responsibilities as the wife of a man with special needs.
She professed, “I loved him from the first day we met, and my love for him will endure forever. I believe that God destined us to be together, and I accept this union wholeheartedly. I will strive to fulfil my responsibilities and take good care of him and his entire family.”
Continuing his pursuit of education, Abdulhamid is currently a 400-level student majoring in political science at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), thanks to a scholarship from Professor Abdullah Uba Adamu, a former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of NOUN, who also generously provided the blind teacher with a new home.
