Brave eight-year-old survives two days lost in Michigan wilderness, eating snow for survival
An eight-year-old boy who went missing in the remote woodlands of Michigan has miraculously survived for two days by consuming snow and seeking shelter beneath a log.
Nante Niemi had disappeared on Saturday while camping with his family in Porcupine Mountains State Park.
He became lost during his journey to collect firewood, triggering a massive search effort involving 150 people determined to rescue him.
On Monday, searchers discovered him safe and sound, nestled underneath a log, approximately two miles away from his camp.
Michigan State Police stated, “He demonstrated remarkable resilience by taking refuge beneath a log, where he was eventually located.”
According to police, the young boy mentioned that he sustained himself by consuming clean snow for hydration.
Following the initial alert on Saturday, his mother expressed gratitude for the support received but urged everyone to “please stay away as it will hinder the search efforts.”
The state police emphasized the challenging nature of the terrain, describing it as “highly secluded, hilly, and inundated with standing water due to the current season.”
Numerous roads had become impassable due to heavy snowfall.
The search team focused their efforts on an area of approximately 40 square miles (100 square kilometres) within the park, ultimately leading to the discovery of the missing boy.
Police have since reunited him with his family.
