I didn’t receive N2 billion to declare Binani winner of Adamawa election – REC

The suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa-Ari, has denied the allegation that he collected N2 billion to announce Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani as the winner of the governorship election when collation was ongoing.

The 2023 gubernatorial election in Adamawa State was fiercely contested between Binani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the incumbent governor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ahmadu Fintiri.

INEC suspended Yunusa-Ari after he illegally declared Binani as the winner of the polls despite the ongoing collation of results in ten LGAs.

The election was also put on hold and when collation eventually resumed, Fintiri of the PDP was declared the winner.

Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday, Hudu said he had no regrets whatsoever about the action he took by making the announcement during that election.

He maintained that his announcement of the guber result was his responsibility backed by law.

Yunusa-Ari disclosed that he was ready to present himself to the police this week, even as he argued that neither the DSS nor the Nigerian Police came searching for him as reported.

“I never said the Governor bribed anyone, but I knew there were allegations.

“I swear, I had nothing to do with either Binani or Fintiri. All these stories about the N2 billion bribe were social media hype.

“I have no regrets whatsoever, when you do something that was allowed to be done in a democracy, there are no regrets,” he said.
