‘Nadama’ review, by Aisha M Auyo

Title: Nadama
Author: Fatima Sanda Usara

The book Nadama is about a couple who dedicated their life and energy towards healing and raising their sexually abused daughter. She grew up to be an excellent and assertive medical doctor, despite their low-income lifestyle.

Health and social vices concerning our society and culture were conversed about, in a dramatic and intriguing style that keeps the reader in suspense.

The book is a blast. I gave myself two days to finish reading it, but I couldn’t drop it till I read the very last page. It was full of suspense, very informative, and entertaining.

I learned a lot about cervical cancer, rape, ‘Yoyon fitsari’, community networking, the lapses in our health sector, and the loopholes in our legal and security system.

I especially like the title Nadama. It teaches us how to keep calm in intense situations, and how to avoid hasty decisions that may haunt us forever. It reminds us that actions taken in anger result in remorse, and most times, are irreversible.

The writer did an incredible twist in the story with different pitches and then unravelled the plot in a single chapter.

I very much commend the choice of the Hausa language as a medium for passing this bundle of messages. This will enable many women in our community to be carried along in this health awareness campaign. And unlike the usual Hausa novels that dwell on love fantasy, this book tells our reality in a stylish classic play.
