Kaduna court sentences woman to jail for underwear theft
A 24-year-old woman named Linda David was sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for stealing underwear.
Linda pleaded guilty to the charge and appealed for leniency.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted her the option of a N40,000 fine but sternly warned her against a life of crime.
The judgment aimed to deter others from engaging in similar criminal acts.
The defendant was accused of stealing underwear worth N115,000 and faced a one-count charge.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, informed the court that Linda committed the offense on May 12 at Trinity Supermarket along Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna.
Inside the supermarket, Linda allegedly stole 20 pairs of panties, 20 pieces of boxers, and 15 bras, all amounting to N115,000.
The security officer of the supermarket noticed Linda attempting to conceal some of the stolen items beneath her clothes and subsequently apprehended her.
She was then handed over to the police.
The prosecutor emphasized that the defendant’s actions violated Section 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
