Kaduna man blows himself up to evade arrest

A man suspected of being a Boko Haram suicide bomber reportedly blew himself up with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Monday morning in the Keke community of Kaduna Millennium City, Chikun local government area in Kaduna State.

The individual took this extreme action in an attempt to avoid being arrested by security operatives.

Sources from the community have confirmed that the suspect had been under surveillance by security agencies.

They managed to track him to an apartment in the Keke community, where he had been hiding.

A joint team consisting of police officers, Department of State Security Services (DSS) personnel, and soldiers surrounded the apartment.

A gun battle ensued between the security forces and the suspect.

Realizing that the security operatives were closing in on him, the suspected terrorist chose to detonate an improvised explosive device, resulting in his self-inflicted demise.

The anti-bomb squad of the Kaduna State Police Command safely detonated two other live explosive devices found in the man’s apartment, along with the recovery of an AK-47 rifle.

Following the incident, security operatives evacuated the mutilated body of the suspect from the scene.

They also took his wife and children into custody for further investigation.

The community leader in the area, Malam Samaila, confirmed the incident and mentioned that the security personnel had cordoned off the street to prevent access to the suspect’s house.

Samaila speculated that the security forces had intended to apprehend the suspect alive at his residence.

However, faced with the impossibility of escape, the suspect decided to take his own life inside the house.

The Kaduna State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Muhammed Jalige, had initially confirmed the occurrence of the incident to a journalist.

However, at the time of filing the report, he was unavailable to provide further details as he did not respond to the calls made by our correspondent.
