NYSC promotes national unity, integration – Adamawa NYSC chairman

Story from Usman IBRAHIM, Yola

Mr Baba Doke, Chairman of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Governing Board in Adamawa State, says the scheme remains the number one platform for the promotion of national unity and integration.

Doke stated this while declaring open the NYSC @50 Golden Jubilee Award, Anniversary Lecture and SAED Exhibition in Yola on Thursday.

He added that the scheme had also helped in building and consummating inter-tribal marital relationships among Nigerians.

The chairman, who was represented by the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Jingi Denis, said, “The scheme has achieved great milestones which is a clear testament to the fact that it has met the objectives of its establishment.

“The scheme has made corps members have a sense of togetherness, oneness, friendship and brotherhood among Nigerian youths, irrespective of cultural and social backgrounds.

“We must commend the patriotic spirit of corps members who display selfless services in their host communities in this state through the provision of Community Development Service projects which has impacted positively,” Doke said.

Malam Mohammed Umar, an ex-corps member from Kogi, who established the Optimum Laboratory Hospital in the state, after his service year, appreciated the NYSC for giving him the opportunity.

According to him, he married a Fulani woman and was blessed with four children.

He said that his laboratory had impacted positively the healthcare sector; providing Tuberculosis tests free of charge among other programmes, from 2006 to date.

Umar was awarded the best employer of corps members in the state at the event.

Other awardees are Abubakar Abba, Shelleng LGC, Mrs Merry Demsa as longest serving NYSC staff in Adamawa, and Malam Bobbo Mohammed for the staff merit award.

The corps members also exhibited the products they learned and produced under the Skills Acquisition And Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
