Outrage in Ekiti as grandfather tortures 7-year-old grandson over disappeared meat

Police in Ekiti State have summoned a 90-year-old man, Pa Joel Afolabi, who allegedly tied his seven-year-old grandson to a tree and tortured him over missing meat.

The incident took place in Aye-Ekiti, in the Ido/Osi local government area of the state.

According to a community source, the victim, Tunmise, a primary four pupil, was accused by his grandfather of eating a portion of smoked meat that had been left on the fire in the kitchen while Tunmise was at school.

Upon returning home, the grandfather noticed a reduction in the size of the meat and confronted Tunmise, questioning him about its whereabouts. Tunmise denied taking the meat and insisted on on his innocence.

Enraged by the response, the grandfather resorted to using a cane to repeatedly flog the young boy. Despite the presence of other children who also lived in the house, the grandfather singled out Tunmise as the culprit due to their absence.

In addition to the flogging, the elderly man allegedly tied Tunmise to a tree and subjected him to further punishment for several hours. As a result, Tunmise sustained injuries to the left side of his eye.

Despite pleas from neighbours and passersby to release the boy, the grandfather adamantly refused and continued the harsh punishment.

Concerned residents reported the matter to the police and a local NGO in Ekiti State, urging them to intervene and hold the man accountable as a deterrent to such actions.

Currently, Tunmise is undergoing treatment for his injuries at a private hospital in the town.
