President Biden sends high-level delegation to Nigeria for Tinubu’s inauguration

US President Joe Biden has announced a nine-member delegation that will attend the inauguration of Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu, scheduled for Monday, May 29, 2023.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the US Embassy in Abuja, it was revealed that the delegation would be led by Marcia L. Fudge, the US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Other members of the US mission to Nigeria included David Greene, chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Abuja; Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Democratic Representative from California; Marisa Lago, the Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade at the US Department of Commerce; and Michael E. Langley, the commander of the United States Africa Command.

The delegation also comprised Enoh T. Ebong, the director of the United States Trade and Development Agency; Mary Catherine Phee, the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs at the US Department of State; Judd Devermont, the special assistant to the president and senior director for African issues at the national security council; and Monde Muyangwa, the assistant administrator for Africa at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Tinubu was declared the winner of the presidential election held on February 25, 2023, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He secured victory over his closest rivals, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, to claim Nigeria’s most coveted seat.

However, both Atiku and Peter Obi have challenged Tinubu’s victory at the election petition tribunal. They allege that the electoral body rigged the election in favour of the former Lagos State governor.

Additionally, they are contesting Tinubu’s alleged drug-related case in the US.
