President Buhari renames 15 airports after Nigerian icons

President Muhammadu Buhari has made a sudden decision to rename 15 airports in Nigeria after prominent individuals.

The Ministry of Aviation’s spokesperson, Odutayo Oluseyi, issued a statement, revealing the new names of these airports.

Among the airports affected, Akure International Airport has been renamed Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu Airport, while Benin International Airport is now called Oba Akinzua II Airport. Dutse International Airport has been renamed Muhammed Nuhu Sanusi Airport, and Ebonyi International Airport is now known as Chuba Wilberforce Airport, in honour of Okadigbo.

Additionally, Gombe International Airport has been renamed Brigadier Zakari Maimalari Airport.

The ministry also announced the renaming of other airports. Ibadan International Airport will now be referred to as Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, and Ilorin International Airport has been renamed General Tunde Abdullahi Idiagbon Airport. Similarly, Kaduna International Airport is now Gen. Hassan Usman Katsina Airport, and Maiduguri International Airport has been renamed President Muhammadu Buhari Airport.

Further renaming includes Makurdi International Airport, which will now bear the name Joseph Sarwuan Tarka Airport. Minna International Airport has been renamed Mall. Abubakar Imam Airport, while Nasarawa International Airport now carries the name Sheikh Usman Danfodio Airport. Osubi International Airport has been renamed Alfred Diete Spiff Airport, Port Harcourt International Airport is now Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo Airport, and Yola International Airport has been renamed Lamido Aliyu Mustapha Airport.
