Promises Made, Promises Kept: Gov. Buni Scored 76 Percent in 2019 Inaugural Speech Project Tracking Matrix, by Yusuf Ali
It was the famous Greek philosopher, Aristotle, who during one of his most adventurous postulations had described hope as a “waking dream” implying that hope is another act of the irreducible power of human imagination that, though abstract, carries within it the power of faith and reality.
What is apparent with Aristotle’s analogy was the evidence that, as a construct and a concept, hope has its foundation built on the assurances of a promise that will be kept and faith that will come to fruition. These two words – hope and promise are the crucial resources of great leaders throughout history, from Gandhi to Mandela, and from Winston Churchill to Alexander Hamilton, all these great men were known for inspiring hope and keeping their promises to lead and shine their light for others to find their part.
In the context of what represents a promise, it is understood as an expression of a commitment and a declaration of assurance. The word ‘promise’ translates to honour, pledge, vow, guarantee, oath, and bond. Promise provides a framework for an individual to offer a commitment and accountability and for the beneficiary of a promise, the factor of hope serves as the foundation upon which they anchor their trust, believing that the promise made will be fulfilled.
For promises to be fulfilled, the maker of such promises must be a promise keeper; one who is committed to doing all he said he will do no matter the obstacles on the path to deliver.
H.E Gov. Buni is a personification of promises kept to the people of Yobe State. He has fulfilled promises he made to the good people of Yobe since his assumption of office on May 29, 2019. In an intensive 2019 Inaugural Speech Project Tracking Matrix, Gov. Buni has scored 76 per cent in implementation, and objectively verifiable Indicators show the performance standard reached in terms of quantity, quality, time frame and location.
For example, in 2019 during his inaugural speech, Gov. Buni declared a state of emergency on education, today verifiable indicators have shown that over 2,500 classrooms have been built and additional instructional materials provided.
The Damaturu International Cargo Airport has been completed and commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari. Gov. Buni has also promised to construct modern markets in all the major towns to boost commerce and open up the state for more business. He has so far completed and commissioned Damaturu, Gashua and Nguru while Potiskum and Geidam are ongoing.
The governor has also promised to revive moribund industries to create jobs and improved IGR. In keeping with his promises, the governor has revived Polythene and Woven Sacks Company, Sahel Aluminium Roofing Sheet Plant, Yobe Flour and Feed Mills, Dofarga Spring Water Company and Fertilizer Blending Plant.
The governor has also kept his promise in the areas of road construction. As of today, over 60 rural and urban roads with drainages have been completed while many others are ongoing. In the areas of health, Gov. Buni promised to provide one Primary Healthcare Center in all the 178 Political Wards across the state, today, he has provided 140 functional PHC Centers, Maternity Clinics and Dispensaries, provided adequate drugs and facilities, employed more healthcare providers for accessible and affordable primary healthcare services at the grassroots.
There are many other projects like water, electricity, women and youth empowerment which the governor did not pledge in 2019, but provided to cater for the needs of the people.
This is an eloquent testimony of the Gov. Buni administration keeping promises and impacting lives and building legacies for the benefit of the people. For being a man of his word, however, his records are visible enough for all to see, including his political adversaries.
