Zimbabwean man defies tradition, marries mother-in-law, daughter

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

A Zimbabwean man has made headlines by defying traditional norms and marrying both his mother-in-law and her daughter.

Vashko Sande, previously married to Vimbai Magora, embarked on a tumultuous affair with his mother-in-law that lasted for almost seven years.

However, their relationship took a turn for the worse as Sande became increasingly violent and abusive.

Unable to rein in his behaviour, the elders in their community were left helpless as Sande disregarded societal conventions and proceeded to marry his mother-in-law as his second wife.

Distraught and unable to cope with her husband’s aggressive actions, Magora sought legal assistance to protect herself and her children.

In her plea for a peace order, Magora expressed her despair, stating, “We entered into marriage in 2008, but since 2011, my husband has exhibited hostility towards me due to his newfound love for my mother.”

She went on to recount the abuse she endured and the threats of eviction from their shared home.

Despite the family elders’ efforts to counsel Sande and salvage their marriage, his unyielding attachment to his mother-in-law made reconciliation impossible.

Sande, acknowledging the accusations leveled against him, boldly declared his intention to spend his life with both women.

Upon reviewing the case, Zvishavane magistrate Shepherd Mjanja granted the peace order in favour of Magora, sternly warning Sande against any further physical or emotional abuse towards his first wife.
