Sokoto begins payment of N6,500 monthly stipend to disabled people

The Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has commenced monthly payment of N6,500 stipends to all physically-challenged persons in the state.

The Press Secretary to the Governor, Malam Abubakar Bawa, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the payment began on Tuesday in three centres in Sokoto North, Dange Shuni and Gwadabawa local government areas of the state.

He said the exercise witnessed a large turnout of the already screened physically-challenged persons, who received N6,500 each as their monthly stipends.

The statement quoted some of the  beneficiaries as commending the governor for the restoration of the monthly stipends.

The beneficiaries said the monthly stipends would go along way in improving their living condition, and also reduce street begging.

The governor had during his campaign rallies promised to restore the monthly stipends to members of the PWD community and other relevant segments of  society

The governor, subsequently, set up a committee to actualise the scheme.
