Ibadan varsity professor attacked, shot dead by armed men

A renowned Social and Environmental Forestry academician at the University of Ibadan (IU) in Oyo State, Professor Opeyemi Ajewole, was attacked and shot dead by armed men on Monday night, June 5.

Neptune Prime reports that professor Ajewole was attacked while he was returning home from work.

The assailants went away with his car.

The tragic incident which was confirmed by one of his colleagues said the deceased professor was targeted but motives of the attack remains unclear as uncertainties surrounding whether it was an armed robbery or a planned attack.

This, however, raises concerns about the safety and security of individuals in the country dedicated to knowledge pursuits.

A similar incident occurred in the same area where a lecturer was kidnapped in the same area in the previous quarter of 2022.

Meanwhile, the Principal Assistant Registrar of Public Communications of the institution, Joke Akinpelu, who also confirmed the incident said it is still uncertain whether it was a case of armed robbery or planned attack.

Also, the state police command having confirmed the incident said investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the attack.

The devastating loss of Prof. Ajewole has left the academic community in mourning, as colleagues and students remember him as an accomplished scholar and a dear friend.

His significant contributions to research and education in the field of Social and Environmental Forestry will be cherished as a lasting legacy.

Prof. Ajewole held the position of a senior lecturer at the University of Ibadan until his untimely demise.

He had an impressive academic background, including a Ph.D. in Forest Economics, an M.Phil. in Forest Economics, an M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics, and a B.Sc. in Forest Resources Management, all obtained from the prestigious University of Ibadan.
