Kano State Continues Demolition Spree: More illegal structures on public space destroyed

The demolition of illegal structures built in public places in Kano, on the orders of Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, continues unabated.

The latest targets were the multi-million Naira buildings in Daula Hotel and Hajj Camp.

Just 24 hours prior, a Plaza consisting of over 90 shops on Race Course Road, Nasarawa GRA, had been demolished as per the governor’s directive.

These demolitions took place during the late hours of the night, specifically between 2 am and 3 am. People woke up in the morning only to discover that these structures no longer stood.

The demolition of the building hosting the 90 shops on Race Course occurred on Friday at 2 am. Similarly, on Sunday, Kano residents awoke to find that the buildings erected on the former Daula Hotel and Hajj Camp premises had been demolished.

These actions are part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s ongoing efforts to demolish buildings constructed within and around government-owned land, which were approved during the previous administration of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Prior to his swearing-in, Yusuf had repeatedly threatened to demolish structures built on government land and its surroundings.

However, the demolitions have sparked public outcry, as many of the buildings being demolished were constructed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements.

Before the demolition of the Hajj Camp buildings on Saturday night, Governor Yusuf had visited the area on Friday and ordered developers to halt further construction.

Comrade Dawakin Tofa, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Yusuf, stated, “Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano state has directed the immediate demolition of illegal structures erected within identified public places in line with his policy thrust.”

“As part of his campaign promises, the governor has pledged to restore the glory of the state by reclaiming all encroached public land that was used for illegal structures by private individuals or groups.”

“Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf has emphasized that structures erected in schools, mosques, playgrounds, graveyards, markets, and hospitals will be demolished to ensure strict adherence to urban planning, beautification, and the safety of the people.”

“These places are intended for public use, and it is disheartening to witness the constant destruction and conversion of public spaces meant to provide social services by unpatriotic citizens.”

“We will put an end to land grabbing and the indiscriminate erection of illegal structures in the state.”

“In the early hours of Saturday, the governor’s directive was implemented at Race Course playground, and all illegal structures were demolished to reclaim the encroached lands.”
