Story from Najibullahi ADAMU, Gombe
A community leader and advocate of girls’ education, Mrs Maryam Uwais MFR, has encouraged women and girls to challenge the societal norms impeding their personal and professional growth in the country.
Mrs Uwais gave encouragement while serving as a guest speaker at a webinar organised by a non-governmental organisation ‘Adda Girl Education Foundation’ in Gombe with the theme “Girl Power: Defying all Odds, Empower Girls to Overcome Challenges and Thrive”.
She said women can attain their goals through continuous learning and negotiating with their communities to become leaders.
“The significance of education in breaking barriers cannot be overemphasised. I encourage girls to stand up for their rights, challenge societal norms and seize every opportunity for personal and professional growth”. She advised.
Another speaker at the webinar Hajiya Saudatu Mahdi MFR stressed the value of finding mentors who can guide, inspire and provide valuable advice to young girls.
Earlier in her address, the Programme Manager of ADDA Girl Education Foundation Samira Galadima explained that the event was aimed at serving as a catalyst for change, equipping girls with the knowledge, skills and motivation to overcome obstacles and embrace their potential.
“We believe that by empowering girls, we are building a brighter future for all.” She said.
Chairperson of the foundation, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa said that the event was organised to provide an avenue for speakers who are successful women to share their experiences, insights, and strategies for overcoming obstacles and achieving success for girls and women.
“The webinar provided a platform for dialogue, encouragement, and
empowerment, addressing the unique challenges faced by girls and
emphasising the importance of resilience, continuous learning, and negotiation”. She noted.
