Rising star Fatima Umar Kinal talks about success, values in Kannywood

Fatima Umar Kinal, a slender actress, was born on August 8th, 1999, in Kano. Her late father hailed from Kano State, while her mother is Kanuri from Borno State.
After completing her secondary school education, she sought her parents’ permission to pursue a career in acting in Kannywood and to participate in commercials for corporate organizations before continuing her studies at the university.
Last week, our correspondent had the opportunity to meet Fatima Kinal during a shopping outing, and she graciously agreed to a short interview with us.
Here are the excerpts from the interview:
Question: Fatima, are these your family members? With their approval, may I have a brief interview with you?
Answer: No problem. They are my mother, my twin brother, and my younger siblings. I am now a celebrity, whether I speak to the press or not. People already know me, so feel free to ask me anything. But for a simple introduction, I am from Kano. I acquired the nickname “MUTUM” from my first film. My father has passed away, but my mother is standing right there. My first film was titled “Halin Mutum,” and since its success, I have been receiving offers from all directions.
Question: What are your immediate plans?
Answer: My immediate plans are to return to the university, earn a degree, and get married. However, even after my marriage, I intend to continue acting or producing films, with the consent of my husband. I believe it is better for me to be a married woman than to be successful and single. I am a typical Hausa lady who values marriage greatly. Even at my young age, I am already receiving marriage proposals left and right. That is why I often go out with my family members, so that people will not take advantage of me.
Question: But people say that to be successful in Kannywood, one must be willing to compromise their dignity. What are your thoughts on this?
Answer: The industry has undergone changes, unlike before. Artists are now paid well, there is no sexual harassment, and producers and directors strive to keep their operations away from the press. As for me, I have not encountered anyone who would try to entice me with a lead role in exchange for ulterior motives. Give me a role, I will perform, collect my pay, and go home.
Question: Who are your role models among male and female actors?
Answer: I have many role models, but the influence of social media has caused some crises in our profession. However, if one focuses on their work and minds their own business, they can avoid troubles. The press is beneficial for our industry; they have played a part in shaping my career. I do not frequent hangouts or joints. If I’m not at home, I am likely on a film set. I also enjoy singing and modeling.
