Sex workers drag customer to court in Ondo over non-payment
A middle-aged man, Oluwafemi Damilola, has been brought before the Ondo Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly having sexual relations with four women without paying them their due sum of N45,000.
The police have charged the 25-year-old man with duping the sex workers, namely Glory David, Akere Bright, Valria Isaac, and Ngozi Okoro, by sending them a fake payment notification in an attempt to defraud them.
According to the prosecutor, Mr. Akao Moremi, the defendant committed the offense in October 2022 at Sabo Road in Ondo City.
The charge sheet states: “Oluwafemi Damilola, on a date in October 2022 at Sabo Road, Ondo, in the Ondo Magisterial District, conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by fraudulently engaging in sexual intercourse with Glory David, Valria Isaac, Akere Bright, and Ngozi Okoro.”
“Furthermore, on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, Oluwafemi Damilola indecently assaulted Glory David, Valria Isaac, Akere Bright, and Ngozi Okoro by fraudulently and unlawfully engaging in sexual intercourse with them under the pretense of sending them the sum of N45,000. However, he failed to fulfill this promise and instead deliberately sent them a fake payment notification, with the intention of sexually defrauding them. Consequently, he has committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Sections 249 and 360 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.”
The police prosecutor informed the court that he would be summoning five witnesses to testify in the case and requested a date to study the case file.
However, the defendant’s counsel, Mr. S. A Iluyemi, informed the court that there were ongoing settlement discussions between the defendant and the complainants.
He further requested the court to release his client to him, as the defendant would pay the complainants their due sum before the next adjournment.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Charity Adeyanju, granted the application made by the defendant’s counsel and ordered that the money be paid to the complainants before the next adjournment.
Adeyanju also stipulated that the court’s orderly must verify the payment and report back to the court.
The case was adjourned until June 23, 2023, to await the final report on the settlement.
