Suspected kidnapper dies while fleeing arrest at military checkpoint
A suspected kidnapper, believed to be part of a syndicate that abducted a 23-year-old student from Bauchi State University, collapsed and died while attempting to evade arrest at a military checkpoint.
The deceased, along with two other individuals, had kidnapped the student and made their escape using a stolen 2010 Toyota Camry.
Their luck ran out when they reached a military checkpoint operated by the 133 Special Forces Battalion in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The suspects were promptly apprehended at the checkpoint.
However, the deceased managed to escape momentarily but suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Azare, where a medical doctor pronounced him dead.
In a media statement provided by the Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Ahmed Wakil, it was revealed that two other suspects were handed over to the police by the troops of the Special Forces Battalion.
Wakil stated, “As part of inter-agency collaboration to complement the constitutional mandates of the Police as the lead agency in maintaining internal security, six suspects were handed over to the Command by operatives of the 133 Special Forces Battalion based in Azare, Bauchi State.”
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects kidnapped a 23-year-old student from Bauchi State University, residing in the Federal Low-Cost area of Azare town. They took the victim along with the snatched Toyota Camry 2010, and swiftly headed towards the Misau town route.”
“Upon receiving a distress call, the military stationed at the checkpoint promptly responded, intercepting the stolen vehicle and apprehending the suspects. The victim was rescued unharmed.”
“However, one of the suspects, Damilola James, a male from the Turum area of Bauchi, collapsed while attempting to escape before reaching the checkpoint. He was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Azare for immediate medical attention, but was pronounced dead by a doctor.”
Wakil further disclosed that the suspects were found in possession of eight different mobile phones, knives, and assorted charms (juju). All the suspects have confessed to the crime, and a discreet investigation is underway. They will subsequently be charged and prosecuted.
