Tragic boat mishap claims lives of 100 people in Kwara
Around 100 individuals, including a father and his four children, tragically lost their lives in a boat mishap at Egbu village in the Patigi local government area of Kwara State.
Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, expressed his condolences to the people of Patigi in the wake of the devastating news of the boat mishap, which resulted in the feared deaths of dozens of individuals, with many others still missing.
According to reliable sources, the incident occurred on Monday as the victims were returning from a marriage ceremony in the neighbouring Egboti village in Niger State. The boat was struck by river waves, causing it to capsize and collide with a tree, resulting in numerous fatalities.
The entire Egboti community is in mourning, with the recovery of at least 50 bodies thus far. Reports indicate that the deceased individuals had departed from Kpada village to attend the marriage ceremony in Egboti village. The boat, carrying over 300 passengers, capsized at Egbu village during the return trip.
Sources familiar with the incident stated that 69 individuals from Egbu village, 36 from Gakpan village, and four from Kpada village in the Patigi local government area lost their lives.
When contacted, Mr. Okasanmi Ajayi, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state police command, confirmed the incident, stating that the Divisional Police Officer of Patigi local government area had been dispatched to gather more information.
A statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, conveyed the governor’s sadness over the boat accident involving numerous individuals, particularly residents of Ebu, Dzakan, Kpada, Kuchalu, and Sampi—all in Patigi.
The governor extended heartfelt condolences to the affected communities and residents from other states, praying for the repose of the victims’ souls.
The governor continues to monitor the ongoing rescue efforts initiated since Monday night in search of possible survivors.
He commended the vigilance of Etsu Patigi, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi II, and other local government authorities for their endeavours to save as many people as possible who may have survived the tragic mishap.
