Senate confirms appointment of service chiefs

The Senate has successfully confirmed the appointment of new service chiefs and heads of security agencies as nominated by President Bola Tinubu. The upper chamber conducted a thorough screening of these top-ranking officials, ensuring a rigorous evaluation process.

During a closed-door session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio shared that the service chiefs were questioned on matters pertaining to defense and other pressing security issues. This rigorous examination aimed to gather insights into their approaches and strategies in addressing the prevalent insecurity challenges.

On Monday, President Tinubu submitted a letter to the Senate, formally requesting their confirmation of the service chiefs. Taking this request seriously, the Senate resumed plenary on Thursday with the express purpose of conducting the thorough screening of the nominees. Each service chief had the opportunity to address the Senate, outlining their plans to combat insecurity in the country should they be confirmed for their respective roles.

The newly confirmed service chiefs are Maj. Gen. C.G Musa (Chief of Defence Staff), Maj. Gen. T. A Lagbaja (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla (Chief of Naval Staff), AVM H.B Abubakar (Chief of Air Staff), IGP Kayode Egbetokun (Acting Inspector-General of Police), and Maj. Gen. EPA Undiandeye (Chief of Defense Intelligence).

This confirmation highlights the Senate’s dedication to ensuring robust leadership in the nation’s security apparatus. It is a pivotal step towards addressing the security concerns facing our nation, and the newly appointed service chiefs will be entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the well-being of citizens.
