Customs implements changes to enhance anti-smuggling operations, trade facilitation

In a progressive move aimed at promoting optimal performance and improving trade facilitation, the Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has authorized the dissolution of the CGC’s Strike Force Teams, effective immediately.
Furthermore, he has directed the Federal Operations Units to assume all the responsibilities previously undertaken by the now disbanded CGC Strike Force Team nationwide.
This decision aligns with his vision of implementing effective anti-smuggling strategies while promoting legitimate trade.
The Acting CG has instructed the Federal Operations Units and other Enforcement formations to utilize all the available legal instruments at their disposal to carry out their duties diligently.

He also emphasized the importance of strictly adhering to the established Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and rules of engagement while dealing firmly with individuals involved in economic sabotage.
According to Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer, NCS, “To ensure transparency and accountability, all anti-smuggling formations have also been directed to visibly display their names on all operational vehicles. This measure aims to prevent any potential misuse of authority, misconduct, or human rights abuses.”
It should be noted that during his inaugural address, the Acting CGC emphasized his commitment to dismantling all barriers and impediments that hinder trade facilitation, while fostering a culture of consultation and compliance.
