Anambra hotel tragedy revealed as accidental drowning

The Anambra State Police Command has shed new light on the tragic demise of Miss Chinyere Awuda, whose lifeless body was discovered in an abandoned swimming pool on the premises of Cosmila Hotel in Awka.

Initially, there were allegations that she had been beaten to death and dumped into the pool by unknown assailants after being accused of stealing money at a recent event held at the hotel.

However, in a recent statement issued by DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the command’s spokesperson, the hotel has been exonerated of any complicity in Awuda’s death.

The statement reveals that the pathologist’s report found no signs of trauma on the victim’s body, dispelling the notion of a fatal beating.

“The autopsy report indicated that drowning was the cause of death,” stated DSP Ikenga Tochukwu.

He added that the young lady had apparently run away when confronted, and despite the efforts to find her that night, she fell into the abandoned swimming pool and tragically drowned.

Following these revelations, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has directed that the case file be forwarded to the Attorney General for vetting and legal advice.

The incident, which occurred on July 17, 2023, had sparked public interest and concern, with many speculating about the circumstances surrounding Miss Chinyere Awuda’s untimely demise.

The initial accusations of foul play and the involvement of the hotel had raised questions about security and safety protocols.

In the course of the police investigation, the celebrant of the event, whose naira notes were allegedly stolen, was arrested for questioning.
