Ashleigh Plumptre: England to Nigeria’s World Cup star

Renowned football star, Ashleigh Plumptre, has made a remarkable decision to represent Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, forsaking her previous ties with the English team.

The 25-year-old Leicester-born player, known for her outstanding defensive skills, has revealed that her Yorùbá origin was the driving force behind her choice.

Plumptre, who had previously played for England’s U17, U19, and U23 teams, expressed her desire to connect with her roots and relive her rich heritage.

Her father hails from Lagos, making her half-Nigerian and half-English.

Despite growing up with a predominantly British upbringing, Plumptre was keen to explore her Nigerian identity, inspired by her grandfather’s birth in Lagos.

“For me, I always say that I have to play football for more than just playing it itself. The same way that I chose to join Leicester because of my hometown’s club,” said Plumptre.

“With Nigeria, I wanted to uncover more of my heritage that I hadn’t delved into before because my dad is half-Nigerian and half-English. My grandad was born in Lagos. But I’ve been brought up very British, so, I want to join the Nigerian team where I got to experience food like this, experience more of the culture, I guess.”

Her decision to play for Nigeria at the senior level has not only been a personal triumph but also a significant boost for the Super Falcons.

Plumptre played a crucial role in the team’s victory over highly rated Australia, and her contribution to securing a draw against Canada was commendable.

Despite her exceptional performance and unique decision to represent Nigeria, none of the South-West state governors, all of whom are Yorùbá, have recognized or honoured her choice.

Nevertheless, Plumptre remains dedicated to showcasing her talents and promoting her Nigerian heritage on the international stage.
