Daughter arrested for beating aged mother to coma in Anambra
The Police in Anambra have arrested Ukamaka Udugbo, a resident of Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area, for allegedly beating her 75-year-old mother, who was under her care, to the point of coma.
SP Ifeanyi Umeh, the Divisional Police Officer of Abagana Police Station, confirmed the arrest when the 50-50 Action Group of the WomenAid Collective (WACOL), an NGO, visited the station regarding the incident.
Umeh stated that the police station received information about the suspect physically assaulting her septuagenarian mother, and immediate action was taken, resulting in the arrest of the accused.
After completing the investigation and documentation, the case will be transferred to the police command in Awka.
During their visit, Mrs Ify Unachukwu, the leader of the delegation, expressed gratitude to the police for their prompt response and urged them to ensure that the incident receives due attention in order to serve as a deterrent to others.
Unachukwu described the act as “very unfortunate” and discouraged young individuals from emulating such behaviour.
The NGO also visited Mrs Nkiru Okpata, the President General (women wing) of Abagana Community, to discuss the incident.
Okpata mentioned that a community member drew her attention to a video trending on social media, which showed the incident taking place in her community at Obeagu Umudun, involving Mrs Ukamaka Udugbo.
She immediately launched an investigation within the community, which confirmed the incident, prompting her to take action.
“I am shocked because Udugbo is one of the women leaders in the community, both in the church and her village,” Okpata said.
“She attends general meetings where we preach against violence against women. We are going to strip her of all her positions in the church and the community because she violated our rules and regulations.”
A video went viral showing a woman in her 50s, identified as Udugbo, beating her aged mother, Mrs Theresa Nwaokaka, while bathing her outside her house in Obeagu Umudun, Abagana.
It was gathered that Nwaokaka had been living with her daughter and receiving care from her.
Expressing shock, Mr Emeka Nwaokaka, the victim’s son, stated that his sister’s behaviour was confusing, as their mother had been staying with her for a long time.
He mentioned that his sister was remorseful since the incident gained public attention.
Mrs Eunice Anagor, the chairperson of Udugbo’s kindred, assured the group that they would take care of the victim, who was currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Mr Ben Okongwu, the community President General, reported the issue to the Divisional Police Station, ensuring that justice would be served.
