FCT’s GSS Karu makes history as winners of national schools basketball contest
Government Secondary School (GSS) Karu emerged as the victors of the 2023 Milo Secondary School Basketball Competition, surpassing 34 other schools in the preliminary stages.
This outstanding achievement has positioned the Federal Capital Territory at the forefront, outshining eight other states. Both the male and female students of GSS Karu secured first and second place in the Boys and Girls Basketball Secondary School championships, respectively.
During the presentation of the students to the Permanent Secretary, Hashimu Adamu, the Director of Sports, Education Secretariat, commended the students for their exceptional performance. Notably, Joshua Augustine, a talented 15-year-old, emerged as the overall best player in the competition.
Despite initially participating in the championship as the best loser, the students of GSS Karu defied the odds and excelled in the national finals. As a result, they have earned the opportunity to represent Nigeria in the World School Competition in China later this year.
Expressing his delight, the FCTA Permanent Secretary, Mr Olusade Adesola, affirmed that this victory not only demonstrates the FCTA’s commitment to academic development but also highlights their dedication to fostering excellence in various fields.
Adesola emphasized the significance of nurturing students from a young age and acknowledged the substantial contribution of sports to their overall development.
He stated, “This victory serves as a testament to the fact that here in the FCT, we don’t just educate students, but also nurture them to excel in their chosen domains, enabling them to become champions and role models. Sports play a vital role in student development. The notion that ‘all work and no play’ is outdated because sports is no longer just ‘play.’ It is now a rewarding endeavour that brings fame and monetary benefits. That is why we must begin early.”
Adesola further assured the students of the administration’s unwavering support and committed to providing the necessary resources for their preparation for the upcoming global tournament in China.
In recognition of their remarkable achievement, the boys received a cash prize of N1 million, a trophy, medals, training shoes for each player, and packs of Milo beverages. Similarly, the girls were awarded a cash prize of N750,000, a trophy, medals, training shoes for each player, and packs of Milo beverages.
The event reached its climax with the Permanent Secretary being honoured by donning the medal of champions on behalf of the administration.
