Police IG Egbetokun sanctions officers who run over cuffed man, disbands team in Edo

The newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) in acting capacity, Olukayode Egbetokun, has sanctioned officers who handcuffed a man, forced him to the ground and ran over him with a car in Ekpoma, Edo State.

This comes following a video which went viral on social media last week where some officers were seen trying to run over a yet-to-be-identified middle aged man whose hands and legs were tied and was forced under a vehicle before passersby had to intervene.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, in addition to the sanction of the officers involved, the IG has disbanded the unit in the state.

“In a bold move to address the unprofessional conduct of some Police Officers attached to the Edo State Police Command who were responsible for running over a citizen at Ekpoma, the acting IGP, has taken the decisive action of disbanding the team forthwith,” the Force PRO said.

“This step aims to regularize and standardize police operations in the axis; and restore public trust in the Police Force.”

According to him, the actions were taken to instill discipline in the Force.

“Additionally, the operatives involved are currently facing disciplinary charges and administrative procedures. This move underscores the commitment of the IGP to hold officers accountable for their actions which will never be tolerated in the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates his commitment to ensuring the highest standards of professionalism and ethics while urging members of the public to always cooperate with Police Officers in the discharge of their statutory duties, ” the statement added.
