President Tinubu assumes ECOWAS Chairmanship, pledges to strengthen democracy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu underscored the paramount importance of fostering and upholding democracy in a press release issued by Dele Alake, Special Adviser for Special Duties, Communication, and Strategy.

During a meeting with Senate leaders, headed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who visited the State House to extend their congratulations on his appointment as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu made a resounding statement.

He said: “Democracy must thrive as its survival is essential for progress. We must send a strong message to the rest of the world, especially outside of Africa, that we are serious about our commitments”.

His unexpected and unanimous election as the leader of the 16 West African heads of government left President Tinubu humbled and aware of the increased dedication and hard work it entailed.

Reflecting on his election, he remarked, “This additional responsibility is a testament to the trust and confidence that fellow leaders in the region have placed in me. With your support and that of other stakeholders, I am motivated to do more, as the credit bestowed upon me signifies a great deal.”

Amidst the prevailing challenges, President Tinubu assured Nigerians that he would fulfill his duties with unwavering commitment, determined not to disappoint.

In his address, Senator Akpabio commended President Tinubu’s election during his inaugural encounter with the regional body, considering it a testament to the immense respect his colleagues hold for him.

He extended warm congratulations on the achievement and emphasized the renewed hope that President Tinubu has instilled in the Nigerian people.

“We are here to celebrate the victory you brought back to our nation. On your first day at ECOWAS, your fellow Presidents unanimously elected you to lead them. Your emergence represents the optimism and renewed aspirations that you inspire in Nigerians,” stated Senator Akpabio.

He further assured President Tinubu of the unwavering support of the Senate and the entire National Assembly, pledging to work collectively in fulfilling his mandate and bringing to fruition his vision of a more prosperous Nigeria.
