Hit-and-run driver kills dedicated police officer in Ondo
In a heartbreaking incident on Sunday, a senior officer from the Nigeria Police Force, Ondo State Command, was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Ifon express road in the Ose Local Government Area.
The officer, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was carrying out stop-and-check duties at the time of the incident.
According to witnesses, the driver responsible for the accident fled the scene immediately.
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ondo state, confirmed the incident during a brief conversation with reporters in Akure, the state capital.
She stated that the officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was attempting to stop the suspected vehicle when the driver veered off the road and struck him.
“The incident occurred as the police were trying to halt the driver, but he failed to comply due to suspicion surrounding his vehicle,” Odunlami-Omisanya explained. “Our officers were alerted, and upon arriving at a specific location in Ifon, the driver switched lanes and collided with the ASP, resulting in his immediate death. Thankfully, the driver was pursued and apprehended by military personnel in Sobe, Edo State.”
Ifon road has gained notoriety as one of the most perilous routes in the state, causing distress among motorists and commuters due to the activities of kidnappers.
