Amidst president’s order, CG solicits cooperation of jibia border communities

Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, paid a courteous visit to Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State on Friday, August 4th, 2023. Accompanied by his delegation, they discussed the recent closure of borders linking Nigeria to Niger Republic.
CGC Adeniyi emphasized that the decision to close the borders was made by President Ahmad Bola Tinubu, who also serves as the Chairman of ECOWAS. He assured the governor that the closure was not intended to harm Nigerian businesses and that it is a temporary measure to address the current situation.

“The President takes this matter seriously, and he aims to protect the democracy and peaceful coexistence in this country; therefore, the current happenings in Niger prompted President Tinubu to take this action. So, in view of that, we are here to evaluate the level of compliance of the directive, as well as to assess the activities of the officers and men of the Service in the axis.”
Furthermore, the CGC highlighted that the closure affects multiple borders within the ECOWAS region. He reiterated his commitment to sensitizing the communities about the reasons behind the decision while implementing the closure.
Deputy Governor Farouk Lawal, representing Governor Radda, welcomed the CGC and expressed full support for his tenure. He congratulated CGC Adeniyi on his appointment and wished him a successful term.
During his visit, the CGC also inspected the Customs Katsina-Jibia Outstation to assess compliance with the closure order and engage with local residents and stakeholders. He stressed the importance of maintaining peace and democracy in Nigeria and the need to address the instability in Niger.
In response, stakeholders assured the CGC of their commitment to abide by the directive and support him throughout his tenure. They acknowledged the slight changes brought about by the closure but expressed their willingness to comply with the decision.
The government remains dedicated to fostering a peaceful environment and protecting the interests of Nigerians.
