Man in Lagos docked for rape, abortion

A 32-year-old unemployed man in Lagos, identified as Akinpelumi Temitope, has been brought before a Magistrate court, facing charges of allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman and attempting to force her to take birth control pills.

According to the Prosecution Counsel, Mrs. Olawunmi Osibanjo, the incident occurred on July 31 at the Igbo-Olomu Estate area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Temitope reportedly entered the woman’s apartment, where he sexually assaulted her and attempted to make her take an overdose of pills.

The victim, a recent graduate who had just completed her one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was visiting her sister residing in the estate when the unfortunate incident took place.

The sister promptly reported the case to the police, leading to Temitope’s arrest.

Temitope is facing charges under sections 260 and 145(2) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State (2015), related to rape and attempted procurement of abortion.

During the court proceeding, Chief Magistrate A. B. Olagbegi-Adelabu decided not to take Temitope’s plea. Instead, she referred the case file to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The case is scheduled for mention on September 14.
