England vs Nigeria: Unfair referee call sparks frustration among Nigerians
The highly anticipated clash between Nigeria and England in the Round of Sixteen at the 2023 Women’s World Cup took an unfortunate turn when Nigeria faced a glaringly unfair call from the referee.
This decision, made against Nigeria, left fans and players frustrated during what was an otherwise thrilling match.

Upon careful examination, it became evident that the contact made by Ajibade was minimal and more of a soft touch rather than a significant foul. Thanks to VAR’s timely intervention, the initial decision was overturned, sparing Nigeria from a potentially game-changing penalty.
This incident raises important questions about the consistency and accuracy of referee decisions in crucial matches.
The narrow margins in football highlight the need for technology, like VAR, to assist in major tournaments such as the Women’s World Cup. VAR’s implementation aims to minimize human errors and ensure fair officiating, as exemplified in this case.
