In a resolute move to align higher education with the prevailing global digital landscape, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has taken momentous steps by augmenting its annual intervention for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in universities. The fund, on August 8th, 2023, announced a remarkable increase, elevating the yearly support from N15 million to an impressive N100 million.

This stride towards technological empowerment was unveiled by TETFund, highlighting the imperative for institutions to embrace the contemporary digital reality. The surge in ICT funding serves as a catalyst to ensure that universities remain at the forefront of digital innovation and education.

Furthermore, TETFund revealed its ambitious initiative to provide convenient access to online academic resources through the imminent launch of the “Blackboard Learning Platform.” This groundbreaking endeavor is set to benefit over two million students and members of the academic community across tertiary institutions throughout the nation.

Speaking at the commencement of a comprehensive three-day workshop centered on the implementation of the Enhanced Blackboard Learning Management System in Abuja, Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, emphasized the strategic significance of this move. The workshop, attended by directors of Information and Communication Technology from the 253 beneficiary institutions, stands as a pivotal measure to bridge the digital skills gap within universities, polytechnics, and Colleges of Education across the country.

Mr. Echono underscored the far-reaching impact of Information and Communication Technology, especially within the realm of education. He remarked, “Given the rising significance of Information and Communication Technology across diverse sectors, including education, this initiative has the potential to positively impact educators, advancement of our educational landscape.”

The TETFund’s resolute commitment to enhancing digital proficiency within the academic sphere stands as a testament to their dedication in shaping a technologically advanced and globally competitive educational landscape in Nigeria.
