Customs, Borno state gov’t collaborate to re-establish cross-border trade in Northeast

The Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has expressed his commitment to improving trade activities in the Northeastern region of Nigeria. This was revealed during a courtesy visit by the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, to the Customs Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, August 17, 2023.
The Ag. CG of NCS emphasized that this measure would not only boost the economy of the region but also create job opportunities for the people in Borno State. He also acknowledged the longstanding relationship between the NCS and the Borno State Government in matters of border security and humanitarian services. Furthermore, he expressed his readiness to support victims of terrorism in the state.

In terms of community relations, the CG highlighted the need for support from the Governor and the border communities in Borno. He acknowledged the degraded state of the insurgency and emphasized the importance of leveraging the existing good relationship with Cameroon and the southern part of Chad.
The Acting Comptroller-General assured Governor Zulum of the NCS’s dedication to collaborating with the military in developing new measures to restore the cross-border trade structure in the area.
Governor Zulum congratulated CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR on his appointment as the Comptroller-General of Customs and commended the NCS for their assistance to displaced communities in Borno and other parts of the Northeastern region. He expressed his appreciation for the distribution of food and non-food items to the victims of the Boko Haram insurgency, stating that it has greatly alleviated their hardship.
Governor Zulum solicited the support of the NCS in continuing to distribute necessary provisions to vulnerable individuals within Borno State. He also expressed his willingness to collaborate with the Nigeria Customs Service in promoting transborder trade in the Northeast, particularly in Borno State.
As peace gradually returns to Borno State, the Governor affirmed his commitment to working with the NCS to enhance the transportation of goods between Nigerian borders with Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.
