Kaduna housewives demand Govt action as hunger, food prices soar

Housewives in Rigasa community of Igabi Local Government Area, Kaduna State, took to the streets in a peaceful protest to draw attention to the urgent issues of hunger and skyrocketing food prices in the state.

Chanting slogans such as “Tinubu, we are hungry,” the protesters called for assistance from the President, explaining that they had never before experienced such dire circumstances.

One courageous elderly woman, despite her illness, joined the protest to advocate for her five orphaned grandchildren, emphasizing their desperate need for nourishment. With the passing of her late husband’s siblings, who had been providing support, she was left with no option but to seek public help.

Another woman, aged 50, tragically stated that two children had lost their lives due to hunger in the community, attributing their deaths to their parents’ inability to provide sufficient sustenance.

The demonstrators made it clear that they were not seeking handouts, but rather appealing to President Tinubu to address the food price crisis so that essential items could be more affordable.

One woman, echoing their sentiment, pleaded for food assistance, emphasizing its urgency as their primary need.

A protester shared her disbelief that, in her 62 years of life, she had never witnessed the cost of a cup of grain selling at N1400 and a cup of rice selling for N1700.

In related news, the National Economic Council (NEC) approved N5 billion for each state to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal.
