UNICAL implements reforms following review of law school student list

Story from Maimunat Mohammad

The University of Calabar is initiating a series of reforms that includae scrutinizing student lists submitted to the Nigerian Law School over the past two years.

The suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, was responsible for these submissions. The announcement was made by Prof. Florence Obi, the Vice Chancellor of the university, during a press conference held on Monday. Prof. Ndifon’s suspension followed an internal investigation into allegations of sexual harassment lodged by female students within the faculty.

Prof. Obi highlighted, “After engaging with faculty staff, the university’s management has recognized the necessity for comprehensive changes within the faculty to prevent any Dean of the Faculty of Law from exercising undue influence and control over students”.

As part of the forthcoming reforms, the university will establish a committee to supervise the coordination of student transitions to the Law School, conduct a thorough review of the students’ list submitted to the Law School, remove the two examination officers from their roles, and institute a Result Vetting Committee.
