Lawyers blame university clerk for errors in President Tinubu’s academic records

Story from Maimunat Mohammad

The ongoing legal battle regarding President Bola Tinubu academic records spurred by a request from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has taken a new turn as lawyers representing the president recently shifted blame to a clerk at Chicago State University (CSU).

The lawyers said that the errors in Tinubu’s academic documents and certificate, which have fueled controversies, were due to the clerk’s mistakes.

This new development revolves around the release of Tinubu’s academic records which was prompted by Atiku’s subpoena to CSU seeking clarity on the president’s educational claims.

In response to a directive from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Tinubu’s legal team explained that the discrepancies in the dates on his recently-issued certificate and his actual graduation date were unintentional and the fault of an unidentified clerk at CSU.

Neptune Prime reports that the court had given Tinubu until August 23 to respond to Atiku’s demand for the release of his records.

The controversy surrounding Tinubu’s educational background began in 1999 when he claimed to have attended Nigerian schools—a statement he later retracted.

Atiku is seeking the documents to clarify the conflicting information provided by Tinubu to both Nigerian and American institutions.

President Tinubu’s legal team maintains that the errors stemmed from CSU’s response to the subpoena and highlighted changes in the institution’s logo, font, and leadership over time.

This development adds a layer of complexity to an already contentious case that aims to shed light on Tinubu’s academic history. Atiku’s pursuit of these records underscores the questions surrounding Tinubu’s educational credentials and their impact on his political career.
