LASEMA takes proactive measures for Lagdo Dam floodgate release

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has provided assurance to the public as Cameroon prepares to open the floodgates of the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River.

In a statement issued on Monday, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, emphasized the agency’s full preparedness for the imminent flood.

“As part of our commitment to adopting a proactive approach in managing disasters, the state has implemented comprehensive measures,” he stated.

“These measures include conducting community awareness campaigns in historically affected areas and empowering local emergency management committees. We have also strengthened our early warning systems and conducted thorough clearing of drains and gutters at both the state and local government levels.

“We remain on high alert and have enhanced our infrastructure to address any potential challenges,” he reassured.

Oke-Osanyintolu further urged residents to remain calm.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an alert a few days ago, warning of a possible flood along the River Benue basin.

The alert, dated August 21 and signed by Umar Salisu, the ministry’s Director of African Affairs, is still in effect.
