Police in Delta arrest dozens at gay wedding, cite anti-gay law

The Delta State Police Command has declared its intent to prosecute individuals arrested during a same-sex wedding.

More than 100 suspected participants were apprehended at the wedding venue when a specialized police team conducted a raid.

The prosecution will align with Nigeria’s Anti-Gay Law, which strictly prohibits same-sex marriages in the country.

This stern warning was issued on Tuesday as the police paraded the suspects, who had been apprehended at a well-known hotel along Refinery Road in Ekpan, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects were publicly presented at the Ekpan Divisional Police Headquarters in Uvwie, pending their forthcoming court arraignment.

In another development, the command revealed that it is actively pursuing the culprits responsible for the murder of a police officer attached to the Isiokolo (Otoro-Agbon) Divisional Police Headquarters in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

The officer was tragically shot when two armed individuals arrived at the station’s entrance and opened fire on the police officers stationed there.

Two officers sustained injuries during the attack and were promptly transported to the hospital. Tragically, one of them succumbed to their injuries, as confirmed by Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe.

DSP Edafe emphasized that this incident was not a raid on the station.

He further stated that the surviving officer was receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed location, while law enforcement authorities had launched a manhunt to bring the attackers to justice.
