700 homes, farms in ruins as massive flood strikes Bauchi – SEMA
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has reported that a devastating flood has wreaked havoc on Cheledi Community, located in the Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
According to Mr. Adamu Nayola, the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics at SEMA, this natural disaster has left a trail of destruction in its wake.
Nayola explained that the catastrophe unfolded as the rivers in the area overflowed their banks, triggered by a heavy downpour.
More than 700 houses and vast stretches of farmland fell victim to this inundation, resulting in the destruction of vital crops such as rice, maize, sorghum, millet, sesame seeds, and cowpeas.

This incident, as Nayola described it, is not only devastating but also stands as the worst disaster to befall the state this year.
Many residents of Cheledi Community now find themselves without a home, their lives upended by the floodwaters.
In response to this crisis, the Commissioners for Humanitarian Affairs, Housing, and Environment promptly visited the affected area to assess the extent of the damage. They have taken steps to provide essential assistance to the victims of this catastrophe.
Nayola noted that a significant number of the affected villages were located along the stream’s banks.
SEMA is currently in the process of conducting an enumeration of the damaged houses and farmlands, with the goal of providing relief materials to those affected.
In light of this tragic event, Nayola emphasized the importance of public awareness, urging people to steer clear of flood-prone areas and to refrain from blocking waterways with buildings, actions that can help prevent future flooding.
