Clinton Ishaku: The lame traffic warrior rising above adversity

In a world where many might yield to their physical limitations, Clinton Ishaku stands tall. With crutches in one hand and clad in a military-like uniform, he fearlessly commands the bustling traffic at West of Mines Junction in Jos, Plateau State.
Born without any disability, Ishaku’s life took a tragic turn when he was caught in a whirlwind as a young child. The aftermath of that ordeal left him lame and dependent on crutches.

Yet, undeterred by his circumstances, Ishaku firmly believes in the power of hard work and resilience, proclaiming, “There is no food for a lazy man.”
Fueled by his indomitable spirit, Ishaku embarks on a daily journey from Bassa to his self-appointed duty post at West of Mines. His story takes a poignant turn when he recounts how his parents’ separation led him to Jos, where he had to fend for himself after his mother remarried.
Despite lacking a complete primary education, he initially resorted to begging before exploring other job opportunities. However, it was at this very junction that he discovered his purpose and true joy.
Determined not to be a passive observer of traffic congestion, Ishaku began controlling vehicles without any compensation. His motivation springs from a deep sense of satisfaction derived from clearing the roads and contributing to society.
He takes immense pride in his work, firmly asserting that it is better to be active and achieve something rather than sit idly and beg. Consequently, he diligently fulfills his responsibility, braving all weather conditions to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
Although Ishaku’s efforts have earned him recognition and numerous awards, he aspires for further acknowledgment from the government. Hoping for employment as a traffic warden, he yearns for a stable income to support himself.
The then Governor of the state, Samuel Lalong, expressed admiration for Ishaku’s work and pledged to assist him in securing a position, although the feasibility of this promise remains uncertain.
Ishaku encouraged others with good intentions to step forward and contribute to societal betterment, catalyzing positive change among leaders. Despite facing criticism and derogatory remarks from some dissenters, Ishaku remained grateful for the support and goodwill he has received from others.
He emphasized that, while his father may have abandoned him and his late sister, he takes immense pride in his achievements and is thankful for the blessings he has been bestowed.
In a world that often overlooks the marginalized, Clinton Ishaku stands as an inspiration to all. His unwavering determination and selflessness have not only improved traffic conditions but have also illuminated the true strength of the human spirit.
