EPL: Newcastle, Brighton record massive wins in season opener

Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday evening recorded massive wins in season opener of the English Premier League (EPL).

Newcastle trashed Aston Villa 5-1 at St James’ Park as Alexander Isak scored a brace in the 16th and 58th minute.

Isak first goal of the season came in after Sandro Tonali’s sixth minute goal before Villa’s Moussa Diaby found the back of the net 11 minutes after kick off.

It was goal feast for Newcastle as Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes recorded their goals in the 77th and 91st minutes respectively as the game ended 5-1 leaving Villa more pills to swallow after 90 minutes of action.

Elsewhere, Brighton continued with their form from last season as they toppled newly promoted Luton Town 4-1.

Manchester City who were top of the log after 3-0 victory over Burnley have been sent to third position trailing Brighton and Newcastle on goal difference.

Earlier on, Arsenal narrowly escaped a draw after facing Nottingham Forest which ended 2-1 in favour of the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium.

Bukayo Saka and Eddie Nketiah were on goal for Arsenal but the rally was reduced after Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi found the back of the net in the 82nd minute.

It was a poor season opener for Everton and Sheffield United as they lost by one goal apiece to Fulham FC and Crystal Palace respectively.

Bournemouth and West Ham United shared a point after a 1-1 draw at the Arena.

Tomorrow’s fixture, Sunday, August 13 will be renewed rivalry between Chelsea and Liverpool.

Both teams will clash at Stamford Bridge, a litmus test for newly appointed Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino who faces old time rival, Jurgen Klopp in a must win encounter.

Chelsea and Liverpool are yet to claim victory after three consecutive encounters this year alone which all ended in draws.
