FCTA cracks down on rickety vehicles, unlawful motor parks

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through its Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), has announced its commitment to take action against owners of unsafe vehicles within the city.
The agency has declared that those operating illegal motor parks will face prosecution, along with the impoundment of their vehicles and the arrest of owners of unroadworthy vehicles.
Deborah Osho, the head of operations at DRTS, made this announcement in Abuja on Tuesday, August 22, during an operation aimed at clearing the city of illegal motor parks, dilapidated cars, tricycles, and motorcycles.
Osho emphasized that during the operation in the FCT, authorities seized approximately 20 vehicles, ten tricycles, and 15 motorcycles for various violations.
She stated that this move is part of a broader effort to enhance the safety and security of the city.

According to Osho, the motorcycles and tricycles were confiscated for engaging in unlawful activities within the city limits.
She added, “The main goal is to keep the city clean and free of rickety vehicles littering the streets of the capital city.
“Most of the commercial taxis, motorcycles, and tricycles were constituting a nuisance in the nation’s capital city. This is unacceptable.
“We are doing everything we can to address the problem, and we will continue to clamp down on all rickety vehicles and taxis operating illegal parks around the city”.
Commenting on the operation, Peter Olumuji, the secretary of Command and Control at FCTA Taskforce, stated that ridding the city of various forms of illegality will enhance security in the FCT.
He further confirmed that DRTS will collaborate with security agencies to pursue owners of illegal motor parks, drivers of unsafe vehicles, and operators of commercial tricycles and motorcycles.
Additionally, it was reported by The ICIR that the newly sworn-in Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Monday, August 21, issued a stern warning regarding illegally constructed houses and the ownership of certain land parcels.
Wike revealed this during his inaugural briefing after being sworn in as Minister, alongside 44 others in Abuja.
He assured that his administration would provide full support to security agencies in carrying out their duties and cautioned FCT residents that haphazard market setups would no longer be tolerated.
