FWWC: Sweden beat Australia 2-0 to finish 3rd

Sweden clinched third position after a deserved 2-0 win over hosts, Australia on Saturday in the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Sweden upped their game after a disappointing 2-1 loss to Spain on Tuesday in the Semi finals. The European were aiming a spot in the final for the second time but didn’t have the tenacity to outwit the Spaniards.

The third place slot with Australia presented them an opportunity to make a mark in global women’s football and this victory for them would remain a memorable one.

Swedes’ first goal was on a platter after referee consulted the VAR which went in their favour for a penalty and Fridolina Rolfo masterfully placed the ball to give her country the lead in the 30th minute.

The Australians didn’t put up much effort after their titillating performance against France seven days ago which led to a penalty shootout to get a 7-6 victory.

Their last 10 minutes push before the break didn’t make much impact on goal.

Kosovani Allsani sealed the victory for Sweden in the 62nd minute to make it 2-0.

Sweden’s best performance at the World Cup was in 2003 after finishing second.

Saturday’s victory for the third place will be their fourth after the 2019, 2011 and 1991 when they made their debut.

The final of the tournament is on Sunday as Spain and USA clash.
