IGP warns against disruption to public order as labour unions stage protest Wednesday

The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed deep concern over the planned nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

In an official statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations and called for constructive dialogue to address the grievances raised by the labor unions.

As reported by the Force Headquarters in Abuja, prior experiences of protests turning violent in major cities have prompted the IGP to caution against potential miscreant involvement that could hijack the peaceful nature of these demonstrations. While the right to peaceful protest is protected by the Constitution, the IGP urged all parties involved to ensure the protests are conducted peacefully and without any disruption to public order.

To facilitate understanding and find common ground, the IGP has directed the Commissioners of Police and supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to engage in fruitful discussions with the NLC and TUC leaders.

The aim is to ensure a peaceful and coordinated approach that can lead to meaningful solutions and prevent any violence or disturbances during the protests.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of all citizens during the planned protests. The Force has put in place all necessary measures to facilitate the peaceful conduct of these demonstrations. However, the police authorities made it clear that any attempts by miscreants to exploit the situation for violent purposes such as vandalism, gangsterism, or extortion would be met with a firm and professional lawful approach. The police will not tolerate any act that threatens the peace and well-being of the country.

Recognizing the potential challenges that may arise, the Nigeria Police Force is prepared to deploy all available resources to uphold law and order and protect the lives and property of citizens.
